Motorists are being warned to be on their guard against a new enemy in the unlikely guise of clandestine tyre slashers.

According to motoring organisation the AA, three per cent of all their call-outs to replace tyres are as a result of vandalism.

AA Tyre Fit, which is the organisation's expanding mobile tyre repair and replacement service, responds to pleas from motorists stranded by tyre problems.

The organisation says that an increasing number of attacks on vehicle tyres are by people with a grudge against particular types of vehicles or drivers, such as 4x4s and commuters.

The problem is said to be widespread in urban areas nationwide, but is twice as bad in London.

A spokesman says: "Tyre slashers often have a gripe with a particular type of motorist, such as 4x4 drivers or commuters taking up residential parking and embark on a spree targeting them specifically.

"Putting your car in your garage offers the best protection and a Neighbourhood Watch scheme may deter vandals who perceive a greater risk of being spotted. …
