Controversial cleric Yusuf al-Qaradawi will not speak at a Metropolitan Police-sponsored conference as planned, the force said today.

A spokeswoman said the force would now continue to back the Our Children Our Future event. Fears had been raised the cleric could use the Muslim education conference as a platform for his extremist views.

Although police insisted he will not make a speech, conference organiser Hasan Mueenuddin said Dr al-Qaradawi will address an audience of thousands in Wembley at Sunday's event.

India surgery

A WOMAN travelled to India for an operation after being told she would have to wait a year for NHS treatment on an agonising shoulder injury, it has emerged. Sarah Paris, 43, from Torquay, Devon, was charged pounds 1,700 for her treatment at a Madras hospital, a fraction of what she would have paid if she had gone private at home.
