Grandad-of-eight John Lawlor had been waiting for almost nine months for an operation when he was offered the chance to go somewhere else.

The 54-year-old, from Cowgate in Newcastle, was due to have a scrotal repair at the Royal Victoria Infirmary but jumped at the chance to go to South Tyneside General Hospital to have it done sooner.

He explained: "I was fed up with waiting and I just wanted to get the operation out of the way.

"I didn't mind going elsewhere at all; it made sense because I was going to get it done quicker.

"I got to see a consultant in South Tyneside really quickly and I'd had the operation within about three weeks.

"The care I had there was excellent and I'm pleased I decided to go.

"My wife took me to the hospital for my appointments, so I was lucky because I don't know what buses would go there from here. But I'm sure there are some ( or you could get the Metro."

Mr Lawlor, who used to work for Nexus as an engineer before taking retirement through ill-health, added: "I think offering people choice like this is a really good idea because it's better than waiting. …
