These two women could hold vital information to help police with their inquiries into the gang rape of a teenage girl.

The 17-year-old was snatched from a busy city street and raped in a car two weeks ago.

She was bundled into the blue saloon as she walked along West Road in Newcastle's West End on Saturday, June 26 between 10am and 11am.

Police believe several men were in the vehicle, although it is unclear at this stage how many raped the girl.

The first woman is of Afro-Caribbean appearance, in her 20s and wearing dark clothing. She befriended the teenager following the sexual assault. The victim was still dazed and it is not thought she told the woman what had happened. They walked together down West Road to the Netto store.

A second woman, pictured with a small child, had walked in front of the victim on the West Road at about 10.30am.

Det Sgt Paul Makepeace said: "We need to speak to both of these women, who may have important information. We would urge them to get in touch on (0191) 214 6555, ext 62310.

"We also need to hear from anyone who was in the area or saw men acting suspiciously in a blue saloon car at the time to get in touch with West End CID in strict confidence. …
