Iraqis Probe Troops' Deaths

Inquiries into the deaths of two North East soldiers are to be handed over to Iraqi authorities.

Defence Secretary, Geoff Hoon, has passed British investigators' files on the deaths of Corporal Simon Miller, 21, of Washington, and Corporal Paul Long, 24, of South Shields, and four other Royal Military Policemen in Al Majar al-Kabir, near Basra, last June.

Cpl Miller's father, John, has welcomed the move but says it is no guarantee that suspects, identified by the RMP's Special Investigations Branch will be prosecuted.

Mr Miller said: "We welcome it as we now feel something is happening. Whether they will come to court is another thing.

"If they don't, then the people responsible have got away with it.

"They have handed over all the case files and the names of the suspects they believe are involved. The SIB has worked tirelessly to obtain sufficient evidence they believe will stand up in court.

"I believe they have known who they were from the early stages. …
