Vent Your Spleen

Article excerpt

I don't want to sound like an old fogey and one of those people who say things were very different in my day, but I really need to say something about the attitude of teenagers and children in general.

I have a teenage son and he talks to me as though I am not even his father. He holds me, and indeed his elders in general, in no esteem. His attitude towards me is nothing short of disgraceful and I really don't know what to do. When I was a boy I was ruled by my father's belt, but I respected him.

At school it was the cane or the strap and at home the bobby on the beat knew exactly where you lived.

I have tried mediating and have tried talking to him in his language, but nothing works. The only time he is nice to me is when money is mentioned.

I wonder how many parents out there are also at their wits' end with their teenagers.

I am not a violent person, never have been, and would never resort to violence with anyone, let alone a child, but I do try to talk things out. But I feel I have lost. I don't feel there is anything else I can say or do.

If anyone out there has any answers, please ring Vent Your Spleen because, believe me, I have tried everything.

DB, Chester le Street.

I am furious with the shambolic justice system in this country with regard to people being killed by hit-and-run drivers. The government should he locked up for neglecting its duty.

LB, Heaton.
