Frizzante and Johnny Murtagh helped to seal a red letter week for Newmarket trainer James Fanshawe as the pair burst through to land the Darley July Cup yesterday.

The Group One contest was the highlight of the July meeting and gave Fanshawe his second major success of the week after capturing the Falmouth Stakes with Soviet Song on Tuesday.

"When you are having a lucky spell things just click into place," smiled Fanshawe as his star was led into the winner's enclosure.

"Today has just been fantastic and I think you grow more attached to fillies.

"She has been unlucky. She was fourth to Patavellian in the Stewards' Cup last year when drawn the wrong side but flew home.

"Jamie (Spencer) said then she really was top class and would go right to the top, and she has proved him correct.

"This time last year she was rated about 80 in handicaps but has improved and is as tough as nails. …
