Eat your heart out Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Sunderland fan Ken Dinning (pictured) succeeded where the Swede failed this summer ( by picking a team which stormed to victory in Euro 2004.

While Sven's men only made it as far as the last eight, Dinning's Herbal City team won the Chronicle's Portugoal fantasy football contest, scooping the pounds 5,000 first prize in the process.

The 58-year-old businessman from South Gosforth included four England players in his starting line-up, man-of-the-moment Wayne Rooney joined by fellow countrymen Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes and Michael Owen in the winning team.

The English quartet were joined in the Herbal City team which started the competition by Ruud van Nistelrooy, Jan Koller, Deco, Maris Verpakovskis, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Figo and Milan Baros. Managers were allowed to make up to five transfers during the group stages and Thierry Henry, Zinedine Zidane, Robert Pires and Christian Wilhelmsson later joined the winning team.

Dinning admits he never expected to win and it came as a total surprise to find he had recovered from a poor start to claim top spot.

He said: "I enter quite a lot of competitions but I have never won a fantasy football-style contest before. …
