Boro's Ambition Is on the Mark

Mark Viduka was lured to Middlesbrough by the promise of further big-name signings and the chance to win trophies.

The 28-year-old Australian completed his pounds 4.5m move from Leeds yesterday and revealed that it was manager Steve McClaren's ambition to take his Carling Cup winners on to the next stage of their development that won him over.

"The main thing that interested me at Middlesbrough was the squad," he said.

"Keith Lamb (Chief executive) knows how many times I asked about what players are coming in and what sort of ambition does the club have, and I had to take that into consideration for my career.

"I want to win things and I feel that Middlesbrough is the team to be at at the moment."

Boro have been accused in the past of throwing big money at players who were past their prime in a vain bid to drag themselves on to the big stage, but Lamb insisted that Viduka, who had also attracted interest from both Italy and Spain, would not be on Teesside if it was not right for both parties. …
