Sinfonia to Keep Busy

It's a question a lot of music-lovers are asking. Between now and next winter, where will Northern Sinfonia's musicians be while the finishing touches are added to their magnificent new home, The Sage Gateshead?

Will the likes of leader Bradley Creswick or principal horn Peter Francomb have to resort to busking outside the region's Metro stations to keep their families fed and clothed? And when will the Sinfonia's subscription season start?

The answer to the latter question is a closely-guarded secret ( the orchestra is understandably concerned that every fine detail of the acoustics in their concert halls within The Sage should be honed to perfection and meticulously tested through rehearsals, and the doors to the music centre will not open until that standard has been achieved.

The answer to the first question is that, rest assured, the Sinfonia players will be fully employed, not only in testing The Sage acoustics, but through extensive tours in which they will perform in venues ranging from rural Northumbrian churches to some of the finest concert halls in Europe.

Under their award-winning musical director Thomas Zehetmair they will perform a programme of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and works by the contemporary composer Philip Cashian in a Continental tour that includes such world-renowned venues as the Vienna Musikverein, Cologne Philarmonie and the Liszt Academy in Budapest.

As well as performing at the HallA Summer Proms series in Manchester this summer and returning to the Edinburgh International Festival in August, the Sinfonia are also booked in for two concerts at the internationally-famed Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
