Jonathan Wilkes is in the frame next week when he plays Danny in Grease at Newcastle's Theatre Royal. Showbusiness Reporter Gordon Barr chats to him

Jonathan Wilkes doesn't need to think twice when asked about his best theatre role to date in the North East.

"Well, I've played Jesus, I've played Judas and I've played a transvestite. I think Danny Zuko in Grease has to be the best of the bunch," he smiles.

"Let's face it, swaggering around in a leather jacket is a lot easier than tottering on six-inch high heels, believe me."

Jonathan, 25, is at Newcastle's Theatre Royal from Monday for two weeks in the role of Danny, a character he first played for a five-week run in Manchester last Christmas.

"I'm having a great time. I mean, you can't not have a great time playing Danny Zuko," continues Jonathan, whom TV viewers will recognise as the host of You've Been Framed.

"Grease was one of my favourite films as a child. I think every lad wants to be Danny and every girl wants to be Sandy.

"It's one of those musicals I don't think will ever date. If you go to any party these days, at some point in the night, the DJ will put a Grease track on and the dance floor will fill.

"And everyone loves the story. It's a classic story really. …
