Article excerpt

It is easy to see why Tynedale head the Fosters Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League. Scott Kay, Stuart Graham and Richard Darling occupy three of the top five places in the batting averages and Graham is the league's leading wicket-taker.

Kay has amassed 450 runs in just six visits to the wicket and has an average of 112. He will surely be missed today when Tynedale defend a 14-point lead visiting Leadgate.

Graham, signed from Leadgate during the close season, has hit 358 runs and taken 28 wickets at just 10 runs apiece.

He plays today, as does Darling, who averages 52 with the bat.

Sacriston will be hoping that their game at Ashington goes ahead, since they are 47 points behind leaders Tynedale and 33 adrift of the Colliers. Sacriston are at full strength while Ashington bring in Stuart Tiffin for Jonathan Saddler. Ian Wardle will line up against his former club.

Simon Prudhoe, who has an unbeaten 119 to his name, is third top in the batting averages while his Ashington colleague, Paul Rutherford, is placed third in the bowling statistics with 23 wickets, which have cost him 11 runs each.

They have failed to win in 11 attempts and are 51 points from safety. They are back to full strength with the return of Darren Stillwell and Annfield Plain will field an unchanged side.

Swalwell are also locked in a relegation battle and, after being close to victory before the rain arrived in their Gateshead Metropolitan Cup tie with Greenside on Thursday night, will be more confident of giving Shotley Bridge a good game at The Spa. The Bridge make two changes, with Ian Heslop and David Love replacing Billy Gibson and Donald Brown.

Lintz share second-bottom position with Swalwell and, although Michael Christie resumes at home to Newcastle City, his brother Gary is still absent. …
