Geordie boss Steve Bruce has thanked Birmingham City's board for providing him with the financial backing to embark on a summer transfer spree.

Mario Melchiot became manager Bruce's fourth summer capture after he signed a three-year contract following his departure from Chelsea on a Bosman transfer.

The 27-year-old right-back has joined Emile Heskey, Muzzy Izzet and Julian Gray in making the switch to St Andrews since the end of last season.

Now Bruce has only to land Chelsea's Jesper Gronkjaer ( also a target for Seville ( to obtain everyone on the hit list he presented to co-owner David Sullivan and chairman David Gold in April.

Bruce said: "Mario becomes the latest of my summer targets to join us and this is due in no small part to the hard work and financial backing of the Birmingham City board, for which I am hugely grateful.

"Ever since I came to this club as manager two-and-a-half years ago I have had tremendous support from everyone and they have backed me to the hilt. …
