Cleaner Who Stole from OAP Spared Jail

A thieving cleaner's shame for emptying her 79-year-old employer's bank account saved her from jail yesterday.

Carol Fowler, 46, cut herself off from her family and friends after she was charged with stealing thousands of pounds from the man, who lived in a retirement home in Coulby Newham.

He loaned her his Barclaycard to borrow pounds 200 when she was in debt but she used it for five months to withdraw pounds 4,234 mainly from cash points, prosecutor Chris Baker told Teesside Crown Court.

The pensioner assumed the pounds 200 was being paid back, but called in the police after being told by his bank he was overdrawn.

Dan Cordey, defending, said the man described Fowler as a lovely woman, and for four years she worked hard for him.

But then her husband left her and she borrowed some money to pay bills before starting to use the pensioner's card.

Mr Cordey added: "She is deeply ashamed of what she has done and she has put her life on hold until this is over. …
