A bid to nurture community spirit while creating more colour in a Teesside village has attracted floral competition judges.

Lazenby Blooms was set up in February by three friends with the aim of helping to bring the community closer together while giving a new lease of life to drab pieces of land.

Now just five months on Pat Hart, Marti Culley and Sandy Sykes, who set up the group, have enlisted a team of volunteers who have been helping to transform the area.

Car boot sales and other fundraising ventures have helped to raise cash for plants, with firms on the Wilton site offering donations and gardening equipment.

The group has also succeeded in getting Lazenby entered into the small village category in this year's Northumbria in Bloom competition, with the judges visiting this week.

Pat said: "We formed the group as we felt it was a shame that the High Street looked the way it did, neglected with no flowers. We had a beautiful green in the village, but nothing to set it off. …
