LIFEGUARDS COMPETE

The 2004 Regional Junior Lifeguard competition will be held on Saturday in front of the Jacksonville Beach lifeguard station, on the beach at the foot of Beach Boulevard.

The competition is open to all area junior lifeguards, ages 9 through 17. Registration is $10, which includes a T-shirt and lunch. Sign-ups are from 8 to 9 a.m. Saturday. Medals and ribbons will be awarded to winners. Events include beach run, distance swim, rescue board race, rescue buoy race, run-swim-run, swim relay race and beach flags, also known as hose race.

WATER SUPPLY TALK

A state park ranger will discuss Florida's water supply Saturday at the Ribault Club on Fort George Island, just north of the Beaches.

The ranger, from Talbot Islands state parks, will lead a discussion about Florida's hydrological system and strategies for water conservation. The talk is scheduled for 1 p.m. and is free. No reservations are necessary.

To get to the club, take the Fort George entrance off Heckscher Drive about a mile past the St. Johns River Ferry. After the entrance, proceed 1.8 miles on Fort George road, bearing right at the fork. Proceed past the Episcopal Church and continue to the Ribault Club. Parking is across the road from the club.

BREAST CANCER WALK

The American Cancer Society will hold a Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5-kilometer walk on Oct. 2 at the SeaWalk Pavilion in Jacksonville Beach. The event will replace the Making Strides Against Cancer event that has traditionally been held in February.

The fund-raising event will help the American Cancer Society continue fighting breast cancer and increase research in the cause, prevention and cure for the disease. This year, 23 Florida cities will put on their walking shoes for the American Cancer Society and Making Strides events around the state. …
