The challenges facing the National Health Service were never going to be solved overnight but the Government is to be congratulated for trying to solve them.

There is no doubt more cash is being spent and improvements are taking place ( albeit slowly in some areas.

Any sensible Government would take the long view. Point to their successes, work on weaknesses and let the taxpayers judge whether they are getting value for money.

This, however, is not a sensible Government.

It is obsessed by the need to show itself off in a good light on an almost daily basis ( and this obsession is causing problems again.

Their totally bizarre reliance on targets to prove their worth has again bounced back on them because today they stand accused of putting short term political gains ahead of real long term improvement.

What other reason could their be for cutting cash to train doctors and diverting it to help meet self-imposed targets in the run-up to an election? …
