Murton are not exactly counting their chickens but, now that they have established a 26 points lead over their nearest rivals, they are reasonably confident they can retain the championship.

Luck has been with them in the last couple of weeks. A fortnight ago they went into their fixture with Castle Eden just a point ahead but they beat the elements and their opponents while nearest challengers Silksworth were held to a draw by Boldon CA.

The two results combined to increase Murton's advantage to 11 points, and at the weekend they again enjoyed the rub of the green.

"All credit to Seaham Park; they wanted to play," said Murton secretary Herbert King. "Their skipper David Moorhead rang me at 10.30am to say they thought they could get the match on, and two hours later he asked us to travel.

"When we arrived, the outfield was okay but it then rained for 45 minutes and it was after four o'clock before we took to the field.

"We then enjoyed a second stroke of good luck when captain Calvin Stephenson won the toss. …
