Godolphin Can Get off to Ascot Flyer

Godolphin have had a great season so far and are aiming for a midsummer sparkler when Doyen runs in Saturday's King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, but there are decent races to be won before that by the boys in blue.

Ascot's top-quality three-day meeting kicks off tomorrow with the highlight the Weatherbys EBF Valiant Stakes, and the one to be on in this Listed mile contest for fillies and mares is the largely unheralded Zosima.

The Godolphin three-year-old went into many a notebook after her first outing in Britain when she finished third behind Celtic Heroine and Coy in the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot, beaten half a length and two.

She hit bad traffic problems that day and did well to run into a place, especially as she was carrying top weight and was giving lumps of lead away to the fillies who beat her.

The daughter of Capote has a series of fancy entries and is clearly highly regarded by connections, who will be hoping for a sign that she is capable of stepping up in grade tomorrow.

The conditions of tomorrow's race are much more in Zosima's favour and as she looks sure to improve for her first outing since arriving from the US, where she finished fifth at the Breeders' Cup, she is entitled to the nap vote.

The veteran Ellens Academy looks to have a terrific chance in the Ladbrokes Rated Stakes.

The ultra-consistent nine-year-old has put in a number of decent efforts over the six-furlong trip this season and was beaten only half a length at York a fortnight ago.

He was a shade unlucky on that occasion, encountering traffic problems right from the outset, and did extremely well to finish in second spot.

He can reward his followers this time after knocking on the door all year.

In the two-mile John Guest Brown Jack Stakes, Peter Hiatt's Moonshine Beach has the right credentials. …
