Benwell and Walbottle, buoyed by their outstanding performance against Benwell Hill in the Independent Scaffolding Cup on Tuesday night, are confident they can maintain the momentum at home to Shotley Bridge in the Fosters Northumberland and Tyneside Senior League.

"We played really well and it is not often that a side from our League defeats a club in the Foster's ECB North East Regional Premier League. They were favourites but the lads came up trumps, especially our South African professional Morne van Vwren who is enjoying another good season," enthused official Malcolm Brown.

Although Graeme Angus returns to captain the side, both Graeme Dakers and Chris Tuck are absent.

Shotley Bridge also produced a good result on Wednesday night when they saw off champions Ashington in the semi-final of the League Cup. Visitors Lanchester will be without captain Kevin Dixon with a broken finger, but they have strengthened their squad and will hand a debut to Trevor Fabian, while former Annfield Plain player Brian McArdle has also joined the club.

Whickham face mission impossible if they are to avoid an immediate return to Division A2. They are 61 points adrift of safety before the visit of Sacriston who still have their eyes on finishing at least third from top. …
