LIKE a hit from a crackpipe, this gutter-level snapshot of south London drug users is short and intense. Synergy Theatre work with prisoners, and author Simon Bennett has done his time both behind bars and in a chemically altered state, so Burn has an authentic tang of the streets.

Watching it, though, feels a little like watching pornography - a chance for theatregoers to live the seamy side of life by proxy, to get a hit from the criminal underclass before going home to their safe, probably non-council houses.

Bennett himself plays Fen, a raddled loser looking forward to a looming prison sentence as a chance to get off drugs.

Fen's girlfriend, Sissy, has recently miscarried their baby, and it looks like Fen may now lose Sissy to his friend Teale, a midlevel dealer who was crippled in a shooting. What's more, Fen and Teale have been charged with disposing of their sometime friend and customer Staide, who has seriously upset a major dealer. …
