Smoking is being banned in Eldon Square.

The giant shopping centre will also be joined by nearby Eldon Garden in being smoke-free from September following months of consultation.

This follows in the footsteps of the MetroCentre in Gateshead and The Galleries in Washington.

Workers in the Newcastle malls are also being offered help to quit smoking to make adjusting to the ban much easier.

Anti-smoking campaigners are delighted by the decision and say it will make shopping in Eldon Square more pleasant for everybody.

Ian Willmore of campaign group ASH, (Action on Smoking and Health), said: "This is a welcome development in a major shopping centre and is in line with the decisions being made by shopping centres all over the country.

"People want to shop and relax without having to breathe in other people's cigarette smoke and now they can."

Newcastle City Council has been instrumental in making Eldon Square smoke-free and today Doreen Huddart, executive member for Health and Social Services, said: "We are very supportive of this ban because it will lead to cleaner air and a healthier atmosphere for the whole community. …
