Restaurant bites

Food Spy hears of a new groundbreaking dish being served at Masala Zone, the value-for-money Indian restaurant with branches in Islington and Soho.

'They've got Ayurvedic thali on the menu,' says Food Spy's Indian restaurant consultant.

'It must be one of those mystic Eastern dishes that you can eat while it gives you a massage.' Back in 2001 when Thyme, the modern European restaurant, opened in Clapham, it was celebrated as the perfect example of a neighbourhood restaurant. Indeed, Time Out said it was 'a place so fabulous it makes you want to move into the neighbourhood'. But Food Spy learns that the restaurant is relocating to Dave Stewart's Covent Garden establishment, The Hospital. 'We loved the restaurant,' weeps a Clapham local, 'but clearly the feeling wasn't mutual.' The Japanese/Italian fusion cuisine offered at Shumi on St James's Street has mysteriously 'defused'. Gone, apparently, is the Japanese part of the bargain, which included providing customers with chopsticks. 'It wasn't working,' a Shumi member of staff explains helpfully.

'We've abandoned the idea because people were getting confused.' Portobello Road is bracing itself for the arrival of a new organic burger bar this September called Babes 'n' Burgers. The people behind it are husband-and-wife team William and Sam Sarne. All is hush hush about the restaurant, but our source reveals, 'As the name implies, they're hoping their customers will be a combination of small children and pretty girls.'

Lizzie Jagger's sofa supper The 20-year-old model daughter of Sir Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall lives by herself in Richmond and is dating Sean Lennon, the guitarist son of John and Yoko. Currently the 'face' of Lancume, she is three years into an eight-year contract with the cosmetics firm. 'I cook sometimes, mainly helping with Sunday roasts or doing quite easy things like stir-fries,' she says. …
