Woman Shows Age Is Just a Number; Yulee: Company Gives Elderly a Chance

Cleaning is tough work, but June Robbins, 79, of Yulee doesn't plan on giving it up anytime soon.

"I thoroughly enjoy it," Robbins said. "I want to work as long as I can, or as long as Fanny puts up with me."

Robbins has been an employee of Fanny Whorton's cleaning service, Casa Limpia, for more than three years. She works five nights a week, between 4 and 5 hours a night.

"I just hope when I'm 80, I feel as good as I do today and am still working," Robbins said.

The white-haired widow, with her slender build, wasn't Whorton's first choice, but she turned out to be her best.

"It [hiring June] was one of the best decisions I've ever made," Whorton said.

Robbins, a housewife, moved to Yulee after her husband, Norman, retired as a lead janitor at Walt Disney World in Orlando. It was Norman Robbins who convinced Whorton to give his wife a chance.

Whorton hired the couple in February 2001.

"When I first saw her and Norm, I wondered if they could handle it. I looked at June and thought she looked so fragile. But, you know, looks can be deceiving. . . . She's a very strong woman. Age doesn't make too much of a difference to me, as long as they're willing to work," Whorton said.

June Robbins was born in Struthers, Ohio, just outside of Youngstown. Her first husband, to whom she was married for 30 years before he died, was a dry cleaner, and she said she was his loyal assistant.

"I have always worked. I'm just a worker," she said.

She was to married Norman Robbins for 27 years before he died in July 2002.

"When you're alone, you're far better to get out and go to work," she said.

But after she lost her second husband, Robbins was afraid she also had lost her job because she doesn't drive. …
