Karen Stupples rewarded her faithful followers with a second round 70 as she stretched her lead to three shots in the British Women's Open yesterday at Sunningdale.

With a nine-under-par 135 total, the 31-year-old from Kent matched the tournament halfway record in the Weetabix-sponsored final major of the women's season.

She edged three shots clear of South Koreans Seol-An Jeon and Jeong Jang and America's Beth Daniel, while defending champion Annika Sorenstam and Laura Davies were both nicely placed in a group on five under.

Stupples shot 65 in the first round, so she regarded her two under effort as "rather boring".

But she was thrilled to have negotiated 36 holes without a bogey, and she hopes for more of the same over the weekend. She opened in style by hitting the par five first in two shots and her other birdie came at the 17th where she holed from fully 40 feet.

The only British golfer to have won in America this season, playing in front of a home gallery is a rare treat for Stupples. …
