A grandmother devastated by the theft of her 13 tortoises has thanked a young man for returning one of the creatures.

Brenda Robinson, 60, of Great Ayton, has now had four of the tortoises returned after police found a further three at a house in Middlesbrough.

The man had paid pounds 120 in good faith for the tortoise before reading a Gazette article about the raid on Mrs Robinson's garden and returned it to the owner who reimbursed his money.

She is now hoping that others follow the lead of the Good Samaritan and return the remaining pets.

She said: "You don't get many honest people about and I just hope other people do the same thing.

"At the end of the day if I am not going to get them back I would rather know they are all right and I would like to know what has happened to them.

"One of the ones the police brought back had been laid on her back. She was a bit traumatised."

Mrs Robinson believes rustlers took the tortoises knowing the animals can be sold for large amounts of money. …
