This is a recent preoccupation.

My mother was far too busy keeping us clothed and fed to offer scheduled hopscotch lessons. My sister and I sat on the rug doing Fuzzy Felt as mum ironed. My mother didn't exactly play with us, but I guess her oven-warmed presence gave us the confidence to imagine and explore for ourselves.

The truth is that kids prefer to play with their friends than their parent.
