Raf rescue heroes plucked two stricken schoolboys from the sea after they were trapped by the rising tide.

A bike ride along the beach turned into a nightmare for Karl Osborne and his pal Ryan Murtha when they were cut off by the waves.

Karl, 14, described the drama which ended with Ryan, also 14, being airlifted to safety by a helicopter from RAF Boulmer.

Ryan, suffered spinal injuries while trying to climb to safety at Salterfen Rocks, at Grangetown, in Sunderland. He was taken to hospital, but his parents hope he will be allowed home soon. Karl said: "We went for a bike ride and we ended up at the beach. We started riding along and the next thing we knew the water was right next to us.

"We tried to get the bikes over rocks and up the cliff but it was crumbling.

"Ryan said we should go back and I said no as the water was still coming in. …
