The Urge to Grow and Grow an Increasing Trend

The urge to grow and grow, not just through opening more shops but by taking the faster, and more expensive route through corporate acquisitions is an increasing trend.

This has implications for market share, new openings with new formats emerging and possible closures where trading conflicts may occur.

And while this is happening retailers are still queuing up to get into Newcastle, undaunted it seems by the high-profile failure of a very non-high street development, Marks & Spencer's Lifestore.

This is a first headline retail failure for the region after many years of success stories. The region's capital, Newcastle, has much to offer retailers but it is the old story of lack of availability and if this situation is magnified across the country, corporate acquisition is the best way to get more high street exposure instantly.

The other method is to wait for the slow burn process of planning and site acquisition to complete its weary way but how long does the market have to wait for an expansion to Eldon Square or redevelopment of the Northern Electric site with its adjoining properties? …
