This week Eleanor Callanmonk talks to Maxine Hughes, 18, from Venezia Salon on Northumberland Street, Newcastle, about her views on the news.

Q. A lot of Newcastle supporters are angry with Kieron Dyer at the minute. What do you think about the situation?

A. It doesn't really interest me. If he wants to behave that way, then fine. I like sport but I'm not that interested in football.

Q. Recently hurricanes have caused extensive damage in the USA and last week England had its own battle with Nature with floods in parts of Cornwall. Does this worry you?

A. I think it's shocking. I saw the damage in Cornwall on the news last week. It makes you realise how strong Mother Nature is and how powerless we really are. I heard the president has been visiting areas affected by the hurricanes in the USA and I don't understand why he thinks that will help.

Q. The salmonella bug has been affecting people in County Durham and the numbers of patients who have contracted it keep growing. Does this affect your eating habits at all?

A. I hope it doesn't happen here and I hope I don't get it! I'll definitely avoid places that have been named in the news as being associated with the outbreak, but it won't really change how I eat at home.

Q. Plastic surgery is gaining more coverage recently, with many women admitting they would not hesitate to pay to change their looks. Would you consider plastic surgery?

A. I'm definitely not against plastic surgery. In fact, I'm saving for a boob job! I want to feel more in proportion and I think people should be allowed to do what they want.

Q. What do you think about women having affairs with men in power, such as Sven-Goran Eriksson and David Blunkett?

A. It seems these women are just trying to get attention and I believe these things should be kept private. …
