Schools in Gateshead enjoyed widespread A-level success, with the pass rate rising to 99pc.

Emmanuel College in Gateshead led the way with a 100pc pass rate and the best performance since the school opened.

Principal Jonathan Winch said: "It was a great day for Emmanuel and meant to lot to me as it is my first year as principal. The students have done incredibly well and we are all extremely proud of them."

Head girl Roxzanna Robson, 18, of Whickham Highway, Dunston, Gateshead, will join the elite at Oxford University after getting four As.

She said: "I still can't believe it. I really didn't expect to do so well. I am going to read Law and am so excited. It's amazing."

Also celebrating was Ashley Scott, a finalist in the BBC's Born to Win sports competition, who got Bs in biology, PE and business to win a place on the sports science course at Northumbria University.

Top performer in the town was Whickham Comprehensive pupil John Watson, who got six grade As.

Whickham headteacher Neil Morrison said: "We have had a very good pass rate again this year. We had 150 students doing A-levels and 108 of them got places at university.

"It is a very important day for these young people and a nervous one for us. You just hope they get the marks they need to go to the university that they want.

"We have had some great students this year. John Watson who got six As is a nice, quiet lad and an outstanding student while head girl Helen Anderson got four As while taking part in all sorts of plays and activities. She has been brilliant.

"I wish all our students the very best for the future."

Helen Anderson, 18, of Clavering Road, Swalwell, Gateshead, got As in German, English Literature, History and Sociology as well as taking the starring role in school plays such as Billy Liar and Our Day Out.

She said: "I am going to Durham University and I'm told there will be plenty of opportunity to get involved in drama. …
