After a spate of tragedies involving holidaymakers killed while enjoying the sun abroad, Sara Wallis asks what we can do to keep safe in foreign countries

Thousands of people on Tyneside travel abroad every year and for the majority of holiday-makers their time is trouble-free.

But accidents can happen just as easily abroad and anyone travelling needs to be aware of the risks, especially when taking part in activities.

The latest tragedy involved mother-of-three Gillian Neesham, 51, a teacher at Prudhoe West First School, who is thought to have died after losing control of her jet ski on the Korovuto River and crashing into mangroves on the Pacific island of Fiji.

This came just weeks after the death of a North East teenager who was killed while in a dinghy in the Caribbean island of Virgin Gorda.

Luke Noble, 15, of East Boldon, died after a speedboat crashed into his dinghy throwing him into the water. A Dutchman has been quizzed by police after the driver of the speedboat fled the scene.

Last October, Douglas Bryson, 30, of Wrekenton, Gateshead, drowned while swimming off the coast of Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria.

He had been on a pleasure cruise but dived into the water after the crew anchored to allow tourists to swim. Friends and passengers claim vital minutes were lost when the captain headed back to shore for help.

Tourists looking for a good time also need to be aware of the potential dangers of a night out abroad and around their hotel.

Christopher Rochester, 24, of Chester-le-Street, fell 40ft from a hotel balcony while in the Greek island resort of Faliraki.

Three Greek doctors at a Rhodes hospital were convicted of causing his death through neglect.

Although these are at the severe end of the scale, travellers needing medical treatment can face all sorts of difficulties if they do not have the correct insurance. …
