EWC Wins Opener; Tigers Defense Scores Three Touchdowns in Win over Elizabeth City State

Edward Waters College coach Lamonte Massie couldn't have asked for much more -- at least from his defense.

Whatever shortcomings EWC's offense showed in Saturday's football season opener against Elizabeth City State were made up for by three defensive touchdowns.

The Tigers (1-0) returned two fumbles and an interception for scores, and they applied enough pressure down the stretch to hold on for a 28-21 win in front of a crowd of 3,342 at Raines High School.

"[I'm] never going to complain about that," Massie said about the three defensive touchdowns. "We don't care how they come, [even] if the defense scores."

EWC forced six turnovers and created enough havoc to force ECSU coach Waverly Tillar to make a quarterback change after halftime.

Defensive end Travis Wyatt recovered a fumble in the end zone for the team's first touchdown, and cornerback Travis Allen added the final score on a 45-yard interception with 7:14 remaining. …
