Losing a crop of games at the beginning of every season has been the depressing norm for Winlaton Hallgarth for many years ( but things are different this time.

Winning two of their three opening matches has put them in fourth spot and there is a growing air of confidence at Shibdon Park.

After beating midweek hosts Seaton Delaval 4-3, Hallgarth faced a stiffer test at home to Shankhouse and were unfortunate to go down 3-2.

Manager Colin Potts was without four injured regulars and hesitancy in his defence let Chris Rue score the easiest of openers for Shankhouse.

Lee Garwood, back with Hallgarth after deciding not to join Gateshead, was a constant threat up front and raced on to a great crossfield pass to equalise before the break.

Early in the second half he scored his second from the tightest of angles to put the home side in front.

Shankhouse, expected to be among the front-runners again this term, rallied later in the half.

Rue's second strike got them back on terms before Jimmy O'Neill snatched their winner.

Despite this reverse, Winlaton chairman and secretary Bob Young is confident his lads can raise a few eyebrows in this campaign.

In Lee Garwood they have one of the league's most potent strikers and they look capable of bettering their previous best Premier Division placing ( they finished seventh in the 2002-2003 campaign.

After their curtain-raising victory over Carlisle City, bad weather has kept Percy Main sidelined ( but they returned to action to beat Premier Division new boys Heddon 3-2 at Purvis Park.

The newly-promoted visitors, however, matched the Main in most departments and probably deserved a point.

The Main took the lead after only six minutes when Rob Herman's pass released Paul Wilary and his penetrating ball to Les Thompson was hammered low past Tim Hand in the Heddon goal. …
