Article excerpt

Shaun of the dead (Cert 15, 95 mins, Universal Pictures Video, comedy/horror, also available to buy DVD pounds 19.99/VHS pounds 14.99)

Starring: Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Peter Serafinowicz, Kate Ashfield, Dylan Moran, Lucy Davis, Penelope Wilton, Bill Nighy.

SHAUN (Pegg) is fast approaching his 30th birthday and can't escape the nagging thought that life is passing him by.

His girlfriend Liz (Ashfield) is beginning to contemplate settling down and long-term commitment, and the staff at the electrical goods store where Shaun claims to be branch manager mock his every word.

Just when it seems all hope is lost, Shaun is given a chance to prove his worth when a zombie holocaust sweeps across London, transforming the capital into a haven for the walking undead. Shaun Of The Dead puts a highly entertaining comic spin on the zombie horror flick, inspired by an episode of Pegg's acclaimed Channel 4 sitcom Spaced, in which his slacker hero became trapped in a video game, fighting off the slavering undead.

Pegg, Frost and co seem to be having a ball, which radiates from the screen, and director Edgar Wright keeps the pace brisk, including a gratuitous car chase sequence. Rather disappointingly, the film's comic fizz peters out towards the end.

DVD Extras: Four director, cast, crew and zombie commentaries, extended sequences including commentary, Raw Meat - The Making Of Shaun Of The Dead featurette, out-takes, The Man Who Would Be Shaun sequence, Funky Pete re-dubbing and more.
