I Feel Justice Has Been Done

A grieving mum today told how she feels justice has been done after the driver responsible for her son's death was jailed for 10 years.

Jan Cain sobbed as banned driver Gavin Fuller was locked up for a decade for causing son Gareth's death by dangerous driving.

Gareth had been out celebrating his 21st birthday and was in the car with Fuller, who had been drinking, when he lost control of his Ford Fiesta in Shiremoor, North Tyneside.

Today Jan, of Battle Hill, Wallsend, welcomed the sentence.

"I kept thinking, `If he only got three years, Gareth's life would only be worth three years.'

"Obviously this is not going to bring Gareth back but at least it will make him see what he has done.

"Part of his punishment is trying to go to sleep at night and waking up in the morning."

Fuller, 34, of Albion Terrace, Lynemouth, admitted causing Gareth's death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and using a vehicle without a licence.

As revealed in later editions of last night's Chronicle, he wiped away tears as Judge John Milford passed sentence at Newcastle Crown Court yesterday.

At the time of the crash, in June this year, he was disqualified from driving for three years.

He was one-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit when he lost control of his estranged girlfriend's Ford Fiesta on a hump-back bridge in Park Lane, Shiremoor. …
