It was a case of "Home James" for farming couple John and Claire Nevin yesterday when they won The Journal's Win A Ram Competition.

"James" is the name they have given to the pounds 1,400 Blueface Leicester they bought with the help of the pounds 1,000 first prize.

And "home" is now South Wooley Farm, Allendale, Hexham, where 450 ewes await him ( along with another Blueface and a Suffolk they also bought at Kelso Ram Sales yesterday.

For John, 37, and Claire, 34, it was their first visit to Kelso ( but sales have been lucky for them in the past.

The couple, who were married in March, actually met at Hexham Mart.

John and Claire ( who also have 150 cattle ( are still rebuilding their flock which roams over 400 acres and 200 acres of fell after being taken out during the foot- and-mouth epidemic.

With the sheep being hefted this is a slow process ( but that's where James comes in.

John, who has been running the farm for 15 years, said: "Things are going well at the moment. …
