RICHMOND, Va. -- As far as Ryan Newman is concerned, the only way to guarantee his spot in the Chase for the Championship at the Richmond International Raceway is to win Saturday night's race.

Anything else is too risky.

"We're still as much on the bubble as we were before," Newman said after moving to eighth in the standings after last Sunday night's race at the California Speedway. "We're going to Richmond to win. We can still be 13th or 14th [in the points] after Richmond."

The top 10 drivers -- or anyone within 400 points of the series leader -- after the Chevy Rock 'N' Roll 400 will move on to the Chase for the Championship, a 10-race runoff to determine the series winner.

Newman is barely among the top 10, just 20 points ahead of 10th-place Mark Martin. Just as important, he's only 404 points out of the lead.

"We've got two shots now," he said. "So if we could just finish in front of the points leaders, we might still have a decent opportunity no matter how everybody else does eighth through 12th."

The 10th-place spot has changed after each of the last five races.

Here's a quick look how drivers can lock themselves into the Chase:

-- Newman needs to finish no worse than third.

-- Ninth-place Kasey Kahne and 10th-place Martin need to win.

-- Eleventh-place Jamie McMurray needs to finish at least six positions ahead of Martin, seven ahead of Kahne or 11 ahead of Newman.

-- Bobby Labonte, who's 36 points out of 10th place, needs to be 13 positions ahead of Martin, 16 ahead of Kahne or 20 ahead of Newman.

-- Thirteenth-place Dale Jarrett, 14th-place Jeremy Mayfield and 15th-place Kevin Harvick essentially need a top-five finish and a crash or engine failure from either Newman, Kahne or Martin.

Once the field is set for the Chase for the Championship, teams not in the hunt for the series title in the final 10 races may force driver changes earlier than expected. …
