Stranded Vehicle Causes Metro Chaos

Rush hour Metro passengers faced delays today as trains were cancelled when a maintenance vehicle got stuck on the track.

No trains were running between North Shields and Chillingham Road in Newcastle and commuters were forced to travel by bus.

Staff had been checking the rails overnight and carrying out repair work when the vehicle became stuck.

It meant Metro operator Nexus could not begin running its daily timetable from its scheduled 6am start.

A Nexus spokeswoman said: "During the night one of our works vehicles was conducting maintenance in the North Shields area but got stuck on the track and couldn't be moved.

"As soon as passenger trains stop running at night, our workmen take over the lines to carry out any work.

"There's a brake mechanism which is used to secure the vehicle and make sure it doesn't run away while work is being carried out.

"Unfortunately, when staff came to release the mechanism, they found it could not be moved, so the vehicle has been blocking the track and therefore we could not run our normal services this morning. …
