City parade commemorates Battle of Britain

War veterans from across the North East brought a city centre to a standstill in memory of those who fought in the Battle of Britain.

Hundreds of RAF personnel from the 1940 battle joined airforce representatives from recent conflicts such as the war in Iraq to march through Newcastle city centre.

The march followed a special service at St Thomas the Martyr's Church in Newcastle's Haymarket at noon yesterday.

Following the service, the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, Coun George Douglas and the Reviewing Officer, Air Vice Marshal Sandy Hunter were invited to inspect the veterans outside the civic centre.

This was followed by a short parade, when the Lord Mayor took the salute, down Percy Street towards Grey's Monument, and returned via Northumberland Street.

All were paying their respects to RAF servicemen who fought and died in the Battle of Britain, considered one of the Second World War's most important events. …
