Andy O'Brien has gone from a famine to a feast as the Newcastle United central defender has suddenly found goal-scoring easy, (writes Alan Oliver).

Before the previous game against Aston Villa, the Republic of Ireland international had not scored for United since netting against Fulham in January.

However, O'Brien has now hit the target in his last two matches, against Villa and Blackburn, but he was just as happy about United's first clean sheet since the goalless draw at Villa Park in April, when he was sent off after only 10 minutes.

The former Bradford City defender said: "It's always nice to score a goal, but as a defender the main thing is to keep clean sheets and I'm happy we've done that.

"The goal was a left-foot effort. A few people claimed they were surprised by my first touch and I don't know why! …
