This Week In 1976

Sept 1: At last something good from what is left of the British motor industry. British Leyland has reported pre-tax profits of pounds 44.3m compared with a loss of pounds 78m last year.

William and Charles survived the Bay City Rollers concert unscathed in spite of mass hysteria at City Hall. Mostly girls, of course. Claire managed to protect them from the worst. She even managed to enjoy herself.

I relaxed after hectic day at opening of Phase Two of Eldon Square development. In spite of lack of fanfare etc, much to do with local media etc. Much comment on Bainbridge's spaceship coffee bar. Customers seemed to like it.

Most of the major shops in place now. The whole thing is proving a great success. People seem to like shopping indoors. I can even forgive the damage the new building has done to old Eldon Square. Progress must be accommodated.

As it is in Bath Lane where what was once Bloomers is being replaced with the New Cavendish Club, re-born after closure of Grey Street premises. Aiming, now, for an older clientele for relaxed evening dining and dancing. Arranging opening night. Will Mike Neville come? Will take Claire when it is completed.

Sept 17: At last, problem over who will drive the Metro super-trams when they are running is close to settlement. Busmen and railway workers argue over nature of vehicles. Are they trams or trains? So long as they work, who cares.

Joe Mills of TGWU says an agreement is close. Says attitudes have changed. Met Mills a couple of times. Not one of your tub thumpers. Pretty reasonable for a `brother'.

Change also in what is left of Durham County Council's old planning scheme. …
