Millwall assistant boss Ray Wilkins stressed the importance of reaching the Championship play-offs this season after the club's first taste of European football in midweek but, on the evidence of this performance, the players did not heed those words.

Second-half goals from Danny Webber and Heidar Helguson condemned 10-man Millwall to a home defeat and gave Watford their second away victory.

Watford were already a goal up when Danny Dichio was sent off after 70 minutes, and they cruised home after that against a Millwall team who never reached the levels they achieved in Thursday's 1-1 Uefa Cup home draw with Ferencvaros.

Barry Cogan thought he had put Millwall in front in the 20th minute, but his header was disallowed for a foul on Watford keeper Richard Lee.

But Watford also created chances, the best of them a Brynjar Gunnarsson header which hit the bar and bounced on to the line.

Millwall player-manager Dennis Wise left himself on the bench for the first half while Cogan came in for his first start of the season. …
