Australia entered today's ICC Champions Trophy semi-final showdown fearing that the intense rivalry between themselves and England would inspire Michael Vaughan into finally stamping his class on the one-day game.

England captain Vaughan has struggled to demonstrate the talent that has established him as one of the world's leading Test batsmen and averages less than 23 at the limited overs format of the game having got more than 50 just seven times in 54 one-day international appearances.

His recent form is little better after scoring only one half-century in his last 11 outings while he was criticised for an indisciplined shot to get out for five during Saturday's victory over Sri Lanka which set up today's Edgbaston showdown.

But Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who saw Vaughan's brilliant displays in Australia two winters ago when he scored three centuries during the Ashes Test series and averaged over 60 against them, is wary that the magnitude of today's match may just inspire his counterpart to a major performance. …
