A trip to Berlin led to possibly the weirdest experience of my life.

I went to the German capital with my girlfriend and ended up eating in a pitch black restaurant while being served by blind waitresses.

There was no power cut though.

I had actually chosen to eat at one of the 'dark restaurants' which are apparently a new eating craze in Berlin.

On the flight over there I had read about these places and decided that I should shake off my usual conservatism and go try it.

But as a blind waitress called Doreen led me by the hand to a table, I realised how good it is to be 'conservative'.

It felt like I was going to be coshed over the head by a German with night-vision goggles and robbed of my wallet.

Apparently the idea is that you only have the senses of taste and smell so the food will be better.

They also have a mystery menu where you don't know what you are getting but all the dishes were written in German so every menu was a mystery menu to me. …
