Anthony Davidson stole the limelight from Formula One's big guns by setting the benchmark in both today's practice sessions for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.

BAR test driver Davidson, from Hemel Hempstead, lapped the new Shanghai International Circuit faster than anyone else in the morning session and followed that up with an even quicker display in the afternoon session.

His lap of 1min 33.289sec is the fastest yet around the pounds 200m circuit and goes some way to easing his disappointment at events last week.

Davidson looked likely to earn a race seat at Jaguar but that dream was ended when Ford put the team up for sale.

His only hope of a race seat now rests at BAR, where David Coulthard appears to be his chief rival.

Davidson's display today cannot have harmed his chances as he outpaced BAR team-mate Jenson Button by a massive 0.885secs.

Kimi Raikkonen was a second off the pace in third with team-mate Coulthard rounding off a strong session for McLaren with the fourth fastest time. …
