A Pensioner was left cowering in a cupboard under his stairs wearing earmuffs in an attempt to block out noise from a circling police aeroplane.

John Oxley, 82, who suffers from tinnitus, says he has no respite from the plane's loud drone when it is flying overhead.

Doctors treating his condition have even given him a music ball, which plays soothing sounds such as waves crashing against a sea wall - but he says even it cannot block the racket.

Mr Oxley said the police aeroplane regularly flies above his home in Ferndale Court, Brambles Farm.

And he claimed the noise was giving him a permanent headache and affecting his health.

He said: "I feel as though I am going to have a breakdown if nothing is done about it. I just can't take any more.

"I can't sleep at night. I want to run away but I have no place to run.

"I suffer from tinnitus and the hospital know about this. There is no cure for it. They have given me all these different things. …
