Heartbreak for Borders in Injury Time

The Borders were disappointed as their hopes of a first Celtic League away win were snatched from them in injury time.

It took the intervention of referee Nigel Owens and the boot of Eric Elwood, in the eighth minute of injury time, to deprive the Scottish visitors ofp a famous win.

But coach Steve Bates said his side should have put the game out of sight before the intervention of the referee.

He said: "There were some strange decisions, but you have to take them.

"We did have chances in the second-half that we didn't take.

"Against the wind we should have taken more chances."

It is an area Bates recognises he must address if an end is to be brought to the Borders' awful run.

"Although our defence is improving, we were na-ve at times and we need to work on what we do going forward," he said.

He claimed both sides played the better rugby against the wind, but said too many chances were given to the boot of Eric Elwood, when Connacht had the wind advantage in the second half. …
