Howard Unveils His ' Timetable for Action'

Michael Howard has insisted the Conservatives could still win the next General Election ( despite the party's disastrous showing in the Hartlepool by-election.

As activists gather for the first day of conference in Bournemouth, the Tory leader has set out how his party will recover from last week's fourth-place drubbing by unveiling a new-look logo and their "timetable for action".

The Tories, he said, would set specific commitments for their first hours, days and months in power ensuring they were in good shape to take on Labour at the election, particularly following Tony Blair's surprise announcement about his future.

"Tony Blair has fired the starting pistol for the race for his succession and everybody is going to be jostling for position, everybody is going to be vying for the succession," Mr Howard said. "The truth is that everybody is going to be looking for their own advantage and the country's going to come a poor second.

"We come to Bournemouth in good shape. …
