Efforts are to be made to step up the amount of time Cleveland police officers spend on frontline duties.

Figures presented to a meeting of Cleveland Police Authority for 2003/04 showed that in the Cleveland Force constables, sergeants and inspectors spent just over 55pc of their time on frontline duties.

Under proposals put forward by Cleveland's Chief Constable Sean Price that figure will rise to 70pc over the next four years.

Police authority chairman Ted Cox stressed that efficient use of resources was the key to boosting frontline police services to local communities.

The authority approved the plans for the significant increase in amount of officer time spent on frontline duties. The Government wants to free up the equivalent of 12,000 officers for frontline duties by 2008.

All police authorities in the country have been given the task of drawing up targets, together with plans on how they can be delivered. …
